About Us
Pet training isn’t just about your pet. In fact, the most integral part of the training process is you. "We don't just train dogs. We train the people who love them". With 25 years of experience in dog training I have learned many methods in getting a dog to learn new commands. From my experience there are 3 basic types of dog trainers. The 1st type of trainers, are the old school trainers, which I refer to as "yank and crank trainers". In there world to get a dog to follow a command they use hard corrections with a leash and verbally. I'm going to skip to number 3 and explain the 2nd where our training falls here at PSK9 Academy last. The 3rd type of trainers, are beggars and bribers. The problem with that type of training is, it only takes a distraction that is greater then the food reward the trainer has to offer. Example a cat running across the road, the doorbell ringing, etc ... for the dog not to obey commands. Here at Puget Sound K9 Academy we fall in between 1 and 3. With classical conditioning, a motivational reinforcement training, which is better known as " Marker training". Marker training is a communication system between people and animals. At it's core, marker training is learning through the use of classical conditioning. You archive the dogs motivation to want to train with a reward based method. This type of training builds drive and makes the dog use his brain to complete and exercise for it's reward, may it be a high value treat, toy or praise from the owner.
